It's Personal

Nine times out of ten when someone compliments my style it is followed up by some self-deprecating comment in which they declare their own lack of effort or style.

First of all I would like to say that I do not see personal style as a competition. I believe that my desire to dress up and experiment with my own personal style in no way means that if you do not your own style is inferior. Appreciating fashion has always been a part of my life, I consider it a hobby and passion. That being said, there are plenty of hobbies and passions others have that do not appeal to me in the slightest. That doesn't make me and my own interests inferior, just different.

When someone tells me that they don't have style because they just throw whatever they have on, it makes me a little sad. I am a firm believer that everyone has style. Yes, each day you make a conscious decision to put particular clothing items on, and that constitutes your own personal style. However, beyond any articles of clothing you wear, your personal style is also derived from the attitude with which you chose to carry yourself each day. Meaning that I believe people are beautiful regardless of what exactly they wear. Personal style is so much more than an outfit, it’s a feeling. And everyone has their own feeling.

With all of that being said it should be noted that someone's specific personal style alone could never sadden me. Personal style is just that, personal. It is an emotional and truly individual process, clearly we’re not all going to be the same! And that is perfectly all right.

In truth, the only way an individual’s personal style could sadden me is if the individual is not happy. Now let me explain. Most people look at me and see that I dress well and care about trends, clothes, the whole nine yards. But I would like you to understand that passion only extends to myself. Meaning, I don’t care if you’re wearing a top from Abercrombie and Fitch’s glory days. I care if you’re happy in it. That to me is what personal style is all about. That is what I try to urge my loved ones to understand.

In short everyone has some sense of personal style and to me that personal style is most "successful” if you (and only you!) are happy.

I know what I’m about to say goes against everything the stereotypical fashion blogger tells you, but… Screw the trends, screw the stipulations, screw the expectations, screw it all. All that matters is your own personal style, which I hope so dearly is your own happiness. That is style and that to me is perfection.

For today’s post I chose an outfit that I think really touches on my own relationship with personal style. Oftentimes I like wearing things that are a little out of the norm because they make me happy. So this fun polka dot top and ruched pink pants from Zara made me pretty happy.

These gorgeous photos also made me happy! I had a lot of fun working with Molly during this shoot. Molly is a really talented photographer and a sweetie too. If you haven't followed her on Instagram yet, you're missing out!

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend in the most personal way possible.
